Do you know that the last 12 June UNESCO launched a forum on climate change????
The initiative is particularly addressed to the experiences of rural communities or indigenous areas such as small islands, the Arctic circumpolar, areas of high altitude, the lowlands, forests, Tropical Subdesert areas and other areas vulnerable to climate change, which
these places are already a reality.
The Forum has the participation of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Permanent Forum on issues of indigenous peoples (UN-SPFII) and the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Frontlines will focus mainly on the experience of rural and indigenous communities in areas such as small islands, the Arctic circumpolar, areas of high altitude, the lowlands, tropical forests, Subdesert areas and other vulnerable areas to climate change, when this events are already a reality. The populations of these areas are very sensitive to the impact of climate change, and over the centuries have accumulated a quantity of knowledge and skills that enable them to adapt to new situations. This wealth of knowledge can play a key role in the debate on climate change impact and adaptation strategies. However, from which indigenous peoples still remain excluded.
Frontlines wants to give voice to the frustration of these communities, offering a platform to all those who wish to share their experiences in the field. The forum will be operational in English, French and Spanish, and participants receive news, contributions and summaries of the discussions by mail.
